In July, 2008, I, Princess Rachella, Intrepid African American Girl International Journalism Consultant, pulled up stakes once again and headed to Nairobi, Kenya. Through my various adventures, I've concluded that if I get any MORE explosively fabulous in these prequel years to "THE BIG 5-0," I will have to register myself with the Pentagon as a thermonuclear incendiary device.

Perfect Timing

I'm telling you, there IS a God. How else do you explain that the fact that the one song that would have completely destroyed all of my stoic reserve and left me a quivering, blubbering, emotional wreck had I heard it before August 17th aired on a local radio station two days later?
OR the fact it played as I was in a taxi stuck in traffic on the way to my office in downtown Nairobi? I almost bit my top lip off trying to keep my composure, but I made it...mostly because I feared a day-long case of raccoon eyes if I cried and smudged my mascara.

It was my theme song for my sister from the day it was released. And I've never heard a version more beautiful than the original, sung by Bette Midler. So here's one more birthday message to Julie...

It must have been cold there in my shadow,
To never have sunlight on your face.
You were content to let me shine, that's your way.
You always walked a step behind.

So I was the one with all the glory,
While you were the one with all the strain.
A beautiful face without a name for so long.
A beautiful smile to hide the pain.

Did you ever know that you're my hero,
And everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
For you are the wind beneath my wings.

It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
But I've got it all here in my heart.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it.
I would be nothing without you.

Did you ever know that you're my hero?
You're everything I wish I could be.
I could fly higher than an eagle,
For you are the wind beneath my wings.

Did I ever tell you you're my hero?
You're everything, everything I wish I could be.
Oh, and I, I could fly higher than an eagle,
For you are the wind beneath my wings,

Oh, the wind beneath my wings.
You, you, you, you are the wind beneath my wings.

Fly, fly, fly away. You let me fly so high.
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.

Fly, fly, fly high against the sky,
So high I almost touch the sky.

Thank you, thank you,
Thank God for you, the wind beneath my wings.

I'm going to try and post Julie's high school graduation photo from 1968. Then you'll understand what I mean.

ok girl - every time you get choked up, just envision the photo of you from 1978 - and think about the turquoise ensemble ... and recreate that innocent, blissful, high-school era smile ... you'll come crashing back to reality!
